'It’s rare to play a role that is given a full arc.'

Hayley Podschun, who will star as Glinda in the national tour of Wicked when it comes to Madison’s Overture Center for the Arts from May 22 through June 9, loves traveling via bubble. Below, Podschun talks about her character’s evolution in the blockbuster musical and being a girly girl in real life.

“I love my position of being the storyteller,” Podschun said of playing Glinda. “I love knowing all of these secrets while unveiling the story of how Elphaba [more popularly known as the Wicked Witch of the West] was born into this world.” The actress also spoke about her own character’s storyline. “I love playing Glinda because of her journey from a young, flouncy girl to a mature leader. It’s rare to play a role that is given a full arc.” Podschun also said that she feels complete kinship with her character. “We both love being girly girls—I adore dresses, glitter and pink!”

Centering on the unlikely friendship between Glinda and Elphaba, Wicked features songs by Stephen Schwartz and a book by Winnie Holzman. In addition to Podschun, the cast features Jennifer DiNoia as Elphaba, David Nathan Perlow as Fiyero, Gina Ferrall as Madame Morrible and Walker Jones as the Wizard.

“I walk away always thinking about how wonderful the friendship between Elphaba and Glinda is,” Podschun said of the show’s message. “It’s a great reminder to truly treasure those relationships in life. I know I do.”
